Lincoln Navigator Shift Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the Shift Cable and bracket for a column shift on Lincoln Navigator?
    A:
The repair process of shift cable and bracket for column shift vehicles requires a neutral setting and stable positioning on a hoist. The service begins with removing these components: instrument panel lower finish panel, hood release cable lever, instrument panel lower reinforcement panel, and steering column lower shroud after extracting their screws. The shift cable remains intact when the vehicle owner avoids pushing between the steering column selector lever arm and steering column bracket. The shift cable requires disconnection by first removing it from the ball stud on the selector lever arm before pulling the locking tab and finally detaching it from both bracket and retainer on the steering column. Drive the rubber grommet along with the shift cable downward through the dash panel and unfasten the heat shield only if your vehicle has this component. The manual control lever should not receive any force when positioned near the shift cable bracket in order to protect both components from damage. To disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever ball stud you need to push the locking tab upward. Following this step you should remove the shift cable clip before disassembling the bolts which secure the shift cable bracket to the transmission. Attach the shift cable bracket along with its bolts onto the transmission bolts before tightening them to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). Secure the locking tabs of the shift cable by pressing the cable into the bracket till it clicks and perform a pullback check for successful locking. Connect the manual control lever ball stud with the shift cable while paying attention to any audible signal of correct installation. The cable lock tab needs locking before installing a new heat shield if required. After pushing the shift cable and rubber grommet through the dash panel take these components to secure them at the steering column retention points. Verify proper attachment when both the retainer snaps in place and the ball stud connects between the selector lever arm. Reinstall the steering column lower shroud alongside the instrument panel lower reinforcement panel (secured at 9 Nm). After that install the hood release cable lever and instrument panel lower finish panel following the same torque value (9 Nm). An adjustment of the shift cable should follow this final implementation step.
