The Timing Belt of Ford Ranger cars plays an important function of establishing the right pace between the crankshaft and the camshaft so as to make the engine valves operate in unison with the pistons. This synchronization is accompanied by use of belt to the crankshaft with the help of tensioner and idler pulleys. From the previous and currently produced Ford Rangers, the engine utilizes timing belts which are usually of rubber based and reinforced with fibers. These belts are loved for their cheapness, low friction, and less noise as compared with the past gears systems. More recent designs with curved teeth improve the service life and the acoustics. This is because failure to inspect and replace the Timing Belt often leads to serious damage on the engine, especially for those with interference engines.

Ford Ranger Timing Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing belt on Ford Ranger?
    A:
A technician should start a timing belt service by disconnecting the ground cable from the battery then removing exhaust side spark plugs. Service begins with Crankshaft pulley removal that requires the bolt extraction before removing the pulley and next moving onto outer timing belt cover removal. The technician should rotate the crankshaft until the number 1 piston reaches Top Dead Center (TDC) position. A proper removal process for the timing belt requires technicians to first loosen the spring pivot bolt of the tensioner along with the tensioner adjusting bolt since this prevents Camshaft Belt Tensioner Tool damage. Begin the timing belt spring pivot bolt release by loosening it in place and adjust the bolt gradually to let spring tension out. Start by turning the tensioner clockwise to its maximum position using the adjusting tool and then secure the adjusting bolt tight to maintain the tensioner out of the way of the belt. Remove the Timing Chain/belt. When installing the components position the crankshaft at TDC piston No. 1 so its keyway faces directly upward and the circular section on the crankshaft sprocket lines up with the engine front cover notch. The bearings must be positioned correctly by matching the crankshaft sprocket front cover bracket and oil pump sprocket diamond to engine front cover shapes and camshaft sprocket triangle to mark on the engine front cover. Place the timing chain/belt on the crankshaft sprocket before guiding it in counterclockwise direction to the oil pump sprocket and then to the camshaft sprocket. Release tension from the bolt so that the tensioner pulley can execute its complete press distribution function. Set the crankshaft to move two full rotations clockwise and then advance it gradually until the number one firing position aligns the gear dot with the front cover notch. Additional checking of the timing marks should follow with another round of alignment process if needed. You should tighten all bolts after reattaching the crankshaft pulley with its bolt before you can install and fasten the outer timing belt cover with its bolt. Put back the exhaust side spark plugs after finishing the maintenance.
