Ford Explorer Sport Trac Shift Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the shift cable on Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
    A:
You need to start repairing the shift cable after putting your vehicle in neutral position on a hoist. The selector lever needs to be in the park position before you remove the center console left side panel and separate its connection points between the selector lever and the selector lever housing through the floorpan by pulling out the cable along with its grommet. The servicing process for vehicles with 6R60 transmission begins by removing the cable shield by prying from the boot's nearest point then sliding it away and unlocking the lock tab and disconnecting the selector lever cable end from the transmission manual lever before extracting the cable from its bracket. When installing the cable shield and lock tab on vehicles with 5R55S transmissions proceed with the same method used for other models. Identification of completion requires safe and secure locking tabs together with the cable end connected to the ball stud followed by a listening for the click when pressing the cable into the bracket during installation of selection lever cables for both transmission types. A new shield should be installed to the transmission manual lever after attaching the selector lever cable end and only if the current shield becomes unsecure. Reinstall the center console left side panel after connecting the selector lever cable to both the housing and lever and pushing the cable and grommet through the floorpan. Before concluding the repair check if the engine starts correctly while the selector lever is in park and neutral and if the reversing lamps activate in reverse; adjust the cable if necessary.
