Ford E-250 Steering Shaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the steering shaft on Ford E-250?
    A:
You must first stop steering column rotation when servicing the steering shaft because such motion can harm the Clock Spring. When steering column rotation happens you need to remove and recenter the Clock Spring. The Hunter(R) 28-75-1 Steering Wheel holding device or another equivalent will maintain the wheel in a direct position. The steering column shaft-to-steering gear bolt must be removed for all vehicles except commercial chassis and the steering column shaft should be disconnected from the steering gear using a torque of 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). The process begins by disconnecting the steering column shaft dash seal nuts before installation where their torques need to be set at 9 Nm (80 lb-in). Newly installed steering column shafts should have their coupling bolt removed followed by disconnecting the shaft from the coupling while compressing it before attaching with 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) torque. Use a screwdriver to eliminate the steering column shaft dash seal and steering column shaft from the vehicle. When working on commercial chassis remove the steering column shaft-to-steering gear bolt then install it with a torque of 55 Nm (41 lb-ft). First disconnect the upper steering column shaft from the steering column through removal of its shaft-to-steering column bolt before extraction of the upper steering column shaft but reinstall with a torque of 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). The installation for all vehicles requires performing the removed steps in reverse order.
