How to remove and replace the rear bumper cover on 2009 Mercury Mariner?

Starting the rear bumper cover replacement requires the removal of four center screws from the rear bumper cover. The process requires removal of rear splash shields by detaching their four pin-type retainers followed by the four screws (two on each side) before tightening all screws to 5 Nm (44 lb-in) when installing. After removing the two upper screws from each end of the rear bumper cover you must secure them to 5 Nm (44 lb-in) during reinstallation. The installation requires rotary torque of 8 Nm (71 lb-in) for the liftgate alignment bumper bolts and their respective bumper units when putting everything back. Disconnect the electrical connector of the parking aid system and trailer tow when these systems are present. Reinstall the rear bumper cover by returning to the reverse steps of removal while inserting it into bumper slides and replacing all components in place.
