2009 Ford Ranger Axle Shaft Parts Q&A
Q: How to remove and replace the axle shaft assembly for the rear drive axle with a 8.8-inch ring gear on 2009 Ford Ranger?
A: The procedure to replace the axle shaft assembly starts with placing the Ford 8.8-inch ring gear vehicle on a hoist in neutral gear. Start by detaching the rear wheel with tire then proceed to remove the brake drum. Open up the differential housing cover to drain lubricating fluid from the system. Discard the pinion shaft bolt before extracting the shaft through its current path. Any attempt to remove the U-washer should be done by pushing the axle shaft into the middle and avoid damaging the O-ring. Take the axle shaft out with caution so the wheel bearing oil seal maintains its quality. When installing the axle shaft apply grease to the wheel bearing oil seal lip before setting the axle in position without damaging the seal. Install the U-washer at the button end of the axle shaft by extending the axle shaft outward. Installation of the differential pinion shaft requires the existing bolt to receive threadlock coating if no new bolt exists for the process. Then, position the bolts hole on the shaft against the case while tightening the new pinion shaft lock bolt to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft). To complete the procedure install the brake drum followed by installing the differential housing cover while adding lubricant into the differential housing before reattaching the rear wheel and tire.
