2007 Mercury Mountaineer Sway Bar Link Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the rear Sway Bar Link on 2007 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: The servicing process for Explorer and Mountaineer rear sway bar and link requires first measuring the distance from the hub center to fender edge when the vehicle stands at a level static position. Hoist the vehicle using neutral gear position to access it. The upper arm outboard bolt needs to be installed in front-facing position because facing backward will cause wheel damage. Install new bolts on both upper arm locations by tightening them to 275 Nm (203 ft. lbs.) at curb height after discarding and removing the outboard nuts and bolts. Install the new link by securing it to 30 Nm torque while the vehicle rests at curb height. Install the new sway bar bracket nuts while tightening them to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). The installer should move on to remove the sway bar brackets and bushings and afterward remove the four sway bar bracket studs by pushing front studs rearward and rear studs forward. Remove the fuel vapor line attached to the fuel tank by disconnection and unfastening it while setting it to the side. When operating on cars that use air conditioning or heating at the rear you must handle and position the sway bar with special caution to safeguard against damage to both A/C lines and heater hoses. The left-side sway bar should be taken out of the vehicle with the help of another person. When ready to tighten the sway bar link nuts you should use an appropriate jack to lift the suspension until both the initial measurement and the center of the hub match up with the fender lip. The installation ends by executing the reverse steps for removing.
