  A: The first step to repair or service the brake shift interlock actuator of a column shift starts by disconnecting the battery ground cable. The ignition lock needs a scratch awl to access its release pin through the access hole in the lower steering column shroud before you rotate the ignition lock clockwise to the RUN position and remove it. Detach the knee bolster from the instrument panel by first taking off the lower steering column shroud and then removing its two screws.
