2007 Ford Taurus Shift Interlock Solenoid Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Column Shift Interlock Solenoid on 2007 Ford Taurus?
A: The first step to repair or service the brake shift interlock actuator of a column shift starts by disconnecting the battery ground cable. The ignition lock needs a scratch awl to access its release pin through the access hole in the lower steering column shroud before you rotate the ignition lock clockwise to the RUN position and remove it. Detach the knee bolster from the instrument panel by first taking off the lower steering column shroud and then removing its two screws. Lower the steering column assembly only when shift indicator adjustment mechanism is entirely loosened and shift indicator cable is detached from the steering column lever because this precaution minimizes possible damage. The shift indicator adjustment wheel needs clockwise rotation to obtain proper cable slack for disconnection. Proceed with rotating the wheel a few more turns to make it possible to pull the cable free. The first step is to uninstall the two nuts from the steering column absorber followed by a lowering of the steering column assembly to disconnect the brake shift interlock actuator electrical connector. To separate the brake shift interlock actuator from the steering column tube remove all three Torx® head screws and unscrew the bracket from the tube before removing the circlip to split the actuator from the bracket. To install the actuator position it onto the bracket followed by securing it with a circlip before attaching the brake shift interlock actuator to the steering column tube by tightening three Torx® head screws to 9 Nm (80 inch lbs). Connecting the electrical connector to the actuator allows you to position the steering column assembly before securing it with two nuts at 15 Nm torque rating (11 ft. lbs). Fasten the steering column absorber by using two nuts tightened to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs). The shift indicator cable requires passage through the adjustment wheel that connects to the steering column lever before you can install the adjustment wheel onto the mechanism by turning the wheel counter-clockwise for adjustment purposes. The knee bolster should be reinstalled to the instrument panel through two screws while positioning the lower steering column shroud followed by inserting the ignition lock cylinder into the steering column tube. To complete the installation place three screws into the upper steering column shroud followed by battery ground cable reconnection and verification of proper brake shift interlock function during which the key should be removable only when the transaxle range selector lever is in PARK and the lever meets PARK specifications while keyless.
